A series of four cloth-bound books, predicated on four types of news media discourse, News headlines from the invasion of Iraq in 2003 were appropriated, transformed and re-presented typographically to invite personal re-interpretations of the language of spin and hype prevalent during these events. Metaphor and Meaning
This 'text-work' focuses on headlines, which use metaphorical techniques including word-play and meaning. 14 plates are inter-leaved with GF Smith's Transmarque 'shimmer', 130gsm.
Emotive (Loaded) Language
Text-work, which features the frequent use emotive words and phrasing, calculated to draw the attention and to dramatise events. 17 plates interleaved with GF Smith’s Transmarque ‘white cloud’ 130gsm.
Inter-textuality (Headline References from Popular Culture)
Headline references from popular culture are here re-organised with notes on sources and printed both sides of a concertina structure, which in its self is folded within a hard-back casing to match the set.
Phonology (Rhyme, Rhythm and Alliteration)
Headlines which employ the technique of alliteration, rhyme and rhythm to engage the interest of the reader are here appropriated and subjected to a ‘nursery’ colour palette. The ensemble is displayed in a folding map-like structure within the matching hard-back casing.
Smoking Guns and Desert Rats
This is a re-titled and re-formatted version of “Metaphor and Meaning” using the same plates but with a reduced explanatory narrative. This book contain an introduction within the gate-folded front cover.
Into the Red Zone
This is a similar transformation of the original “Loaded Language” case-bound version. This book contain an introduction within the gate-folded front cover.
